Are you HONEST with your children?

Good Morning,

The other day my 10 year old son asked me what a yeast infection was, so I explained it to him and let's just say he regreted asking...lol. Gotta LOVE those Monistat 7 commercials at 6am.

I believe in keeping it honest with my children because I don't want them growing up with a false sense of what the world is really like.

Some people disagree with my parenting saying that I am taking the innocence away from them but I disagree. I don't want my children thinking babies come from a STORK I need them to understand that babies come from 2 people having sex.

However I do believe in letting them enjoy their childhood so I did tell them about the Easter Bunny, Santa Clause & the Tooth Fairy but once they started getting suspicious and asking questions I simply explained that it is a tradition that families pass on generation to generation to make their childhood fun! I also explained to them the real reason Christmas is celebrated and that it isn't just about getting gifts and you know what they seemed to understand that more than a Jolly fat guy breaking into our house at night to leave gifts.

I feel that at times we underestimate our children, we forget they are just little versions of us! I believe being honest with them will not set them up for failure or lead them to look at us as liars as they start learning life lessons; instead they can say well mom & dad did say that.

There are times when they question what we are telling them but in that case I just tell them TIME will show you!

I can't tell anyone how to parent their child because each situation is different but I can speak from expirence when I say it's not fun growing up and realizing a lot of stuff you were told was just made up because adults found it too hard to explain the truth.

Some people fear telling their children about how they were as kids or teens in some false hope that they will turn out better; well sorry to burst your bubble but the truth of the matter is you share the same DNA so even if you hide it they will eventually show your traits and wonder why they act and feel the way they do. I feel it will cause more harm for a child to feel isolated and misunderstood when the whole time you could have just been honest and said you know what at that age I acted the same way; at least they will feel connected to you in some way and understand that they are not just a screw up. We all try to figure out why we are the way we are and we all feel better when we know there is someone else out there that is like us and there is no stronger similarity than with a parent & child. So please think about telling them the truth the next time they come to you because they may already know the answer yet they are testing you to see if you will be honest to them the way you PREACH for them to be honest with you.

I was once asked "But what if they throw it back in your face" well at the end of the day I don't regret anything about my life because it made me the woman I am today, so if they chose to throw things in my face im sure it will hurt but at least I know I was always HONEST with them. I would rather them throw my truth at me than to be disappointed and upset because they felt everthing I ever told them was a lie.

We all know that the truth eventually comes out it's just better if they hear it from YOU!

Always Keeping it Real- SunShyne B.

Our first Book Club meeting was great! We read the first 2 chapters of "Can a Girl Get a Break" by SunShyne B. after we were done we had an open discussion. I have to admit there were a few hiccups considering this was my first time hosting/setting up a Virtual Book club but once everyone was on the same page it was good! I set up the book club as a way to get back into reading and what better way than to do it with other people; figured it would be a cool way to stay motivated, share opinions and ask questions. Having people register and sign in to join our book club and also having our own website available for open discussion is a plus because it adds PRIVACY instead of posting comments and questions to a public social media site; this allows us to really open up and get personal with our discussions so that we feel like a FAMILY and not just a GROUP! To join the book club all you have to do is REGISTER at www.canagirlgetabook.webs.com it is a simple process and ALL are welcomed. Our next meeting will be held Sunday March 1, 2015 @7:00pm. To order your paperback copy of Can a Girl Get a Break visit www.canagirlgetabreak.com or www.amazon.com also available as EBOOK through Amazon. I hope to see more people joining us soon; the meetings are held every other Sunday which gives time for people to order books or catch up on any chapters they may have missed. MUST WATCH!!!!!!!!

Our Babies

Parents we need to know & understand the pain we afflict on our children! The not loving them, the mental, emotional & physical abuse affects them. The not telling them you love them affects them.

The neglect it affects them. The sexual abuse it affects them. The drug abuse it affects them. The not hugging them affects them. Not praising them when they do good affects them. The constantly putting them down affects them.

Understand that we have a responsibility when we choose to have children especially when they don't ask to be here! Nobody has to have children it is a choice you make & a beautiful gift from God so why would you want to ruin such a beautiful gift?????

To all the children out there know that you are loved by SunShyne B.

Please love your children unconditionally and encourage them to be the best they can be; stop taking your anger & frustrations out on these poor innocent babies & making them hate themselves!

Tis The Season

While we are enjoying our family festivities this holiday season; let us not forget to teach our families what this time of year is really and truly all about. It's about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ hints why it is called Christmas. Open your bibles and read them to your families whether they want to hear it or not! It doesn't take much to read a scripture or two. We do a poor job these days teaching our families about God because so many people have shied away from belief. I downloaded the Bible app to my phone last year and it has been GREAT. I will admit when it came to the bible I never knew exactly where to go to find certain things unless I had a learning bible; so I was a little discouraged but then I discovered the Bible app once I got a newer phone. I think this app is great because it suggest plans to read and for this holiday season I am reading "Joy To The World: 24 days of Christmas" to my family. We started it on December 1st and will go until Christmas Day. My children are learning so much and they now understand more that Christmas is not all about getting expensive material things and they understand the miracle of baby Jesus and Gods blessings. So give your family gifts this holiday season but also give them the true understanding of Christmas; this will definitely save your pockets and bring your families closer together. See it's the free GIFT that keeps on giving! Enjoy your Holiday Season....

A Mother's Strength

From the time we hear those words "Your Pregnant" we form an instant bond with our children even before we know their names or how they look. Then we have the pleasures of hearing that rapid tiny heart beat that lets us know this life that we created is for real. We bond with our tiny creations through food and talking to our bellies until our little ones arrive. The easy part is loving them because that love is instant and unconditional from the beginning. The hard part is watching them suffer knowing it is out of your control and in the hands of another person. All you can do is hope and pray that they will care for your child as you would.

We are tested time after time as mothers and I believe there is a strength that a mother has that is rare. To endure so much yet be able to go on through life with your head held high knowing that you are truly suffering inside takes a lot of strength. I know mothers that have buried their child yet they still must smile and go on day by day, I know mothers that have lost their child before they were able to bring them into this world yet they still must smile and go on day by day, I know mothers that have lost their child to drug addiction or alcoholism yet they still must smile and go on day by day, I know mothers that have lost their child to a life of crime so they are sitting in jail yet those mothers still must go on day by day with a smile. I know mothers that know their child is in an unhealthy relationship and as scared as she is for her child she must still smile and go on.

No mothers lost is greater than the next, no mothers pain when watching her child suffer is greater than the next yet we all must put on our capes and be the strong individuals God created us to be.

As a mother it hurts to watch my son suffer; from the time he was born it has been one thing after the next. First he almost died during delivery doctors cut him out so fast they actually cut his face, if they didn't do it fast we both would have died; when he was 5 years old he formed a lump on his stomach they ruled out hernia and after several test doctors never figured out what caused it, I was so stressed I started grinding my teeth in my sleep and in returned formed TMJ (locked jaw) I thought I was handling the stress well because I continued to work, go to school and just live life daily all while secretly suffering inside; I got tired of paying medical bills without having answers so I took him home and prayed, prayed, prayed and prayed some more and that lump went away after a few days; the following year he was diagnosed ADD, a year after that he was diagnosed with protrusion of the eye and this year he was diagnosed with a learning disability so it has become mentally exhausting and then to have to handle all this alone is truly a test of my Faith and Strength. I put on a strong face and front because I have to be strong for him and my family but when I'm all alone I cry and pray for understanding! At times I want to yell "why my baby boy" but I know that is not something a person with Faith would do; so I just wait because I know God knows what he is doing and I can't live my life based off fearing the unknown so I smile and go on day by day.

I know there is another mother out there somewhere suffering as I am, and I know she may be feeling like giving up just as I have felt many times; but I am here to tell you "A Mother's Strength is a Gift from God". You might not understand why you and your child have to endure this pain and suffering , you might be feeling like it's just not fair but when you are have those feelings just remember "each day that you go on with a smile on your face you are inspiring another mother to do the same". As mothers we have an unbelievable strength and it's something that can't really be described in words only through actions and it is important for us to continue to share our testimonies with other mothers so that they can embrace their "Superpowers" aka "Mommy Strength" because without a Mother's Strength this world world be at a loss. So I embrace my "Mommy Strength" and will continue to fight for answers, support my children and do it all with a smile day by day.

Holiday Season Family Time

I miss the times when families actually got together for the holidays! Everything was closed so you really got good quality family time on Thanksgiving and Christmas. I remember us opening our gifts Christmas morning then waiting for our cousins to come over so we could play with all our stuff together. We are in the time of MONEY!!! Where MONEY is the first priority and not family. I hear people say all the time "I can't go see my family for the holidays because it's too expensive or because they have to work the next day". Businesses are so afraid of taking a hit that they completely disregard family values. People want to know why things are so different these day it's because our UNITY as families and as a country is gone! I try to install as many good family values into my children so that they understand that family is first because at the end of the day if you loose your job, or your health start fading it's your family that you will lean on for support not your job because they will replace you and think no more about it because in their eyes there company comes first not you and your family. So please keep that in mind this holiday season and enjoy a little family time because it sure doesn't come around often. May you all have a safe and blessed holiday season! Holiday Feast

Happy Holidays from "Can a Girl Get a Break"

Its that time of the year and it's your turn to host and with the holidays right around the corner everyone is trying to figure out what to feed their families this holiday season. You can always stick to your traditional turkey, cranberry sauce and stuffing mix or you can spice it up a bit and add a few nontraditional dishes to the mix. Adding a few nontraditional items to the menu will ensure you and your family wont get tired of having the same food every year; so instead of having stuffing/dressing replace it with shrimp scampi or asparagus casserole, instead of cranberry sauce do pickled beets or deviled eggs. If you don't want turkey or ham fry some chicken or smother some pork chops in onions, mushrooms and gravy. If you really want to mix it up you can do lobster or sushi instead of turkey. However if you decide to do turkey please don't hesitate to spice that turkey up! I love to serve up my famous "Teriayki Turkey" no more dry tasteless turkeys in my house for the holidays. I have even tried Hawaiian marinade on my turkey one year and it was AMAZING! Its fun making things from scratch I love to cook and have the house smelling like delicious spices. One of my favorite side dishes is stuffed mushrooms; so if you love stuffed mushrooms and are looking for a good replacement dish from your typical traditional Thanksgiving sides TRY my simple recipe below!

2-3 packs of portabella mushrooms (can use jumbo if you want)

2-3 packs of fresh spinach (keep in mind spinach tends to wither down once cooked)

1 can of seasoned bread crumbs (I like Italian seasoned)

1-2 bags of shredded mozzarella cheese (depending on how cheesy you want it)

1 bottle of white cooking wine

1/4 tsp. of salt (or just salt to taste)

Prep work: Wash mushrooms then take stem out, lightly butter baking tray (I use cookie sheet) then place mushrooms on sheet with a little space in between (this makes it easier when it comes to removing them from sheet when stuffed; in other words less mess). Also thoroughly wash your spinach.

Pre-heat oven to 325 for 5 minutes then place mushrooms in oven for 10-15 minutes before stuffing them (this allows the juices to settle) drain juice from all mushrooms before adding stuffing mix (If you don't do this step first your mushrooms will be extra soggy because the juice from mushrooms mixed with the spinach stuffing mix will create a sloppy mess...trust me I learned the hard way lol.). While mushrooms are pre baking prepare your spinach stuffing mix.

This step should be done while mushrooms are releasing its juices.
Spinach Mix :  In medium sized pot add 1/4 cup of water,  1 bag of spinach, 1/4 cup of milk. Let spinach wither down then add more spinach to pot (recipe is per bag so if using 2 bags of spinach double ingredients or add until you get desired texture, I like mine thick and creamy). Add 1 cup of mozzarella cheese and 1/4 cup of seasoned bread crumbs. Stir until thick creamy texture or desired texture if its too thick for you just slowly pour in more milk until it loosens up. Once everything is blended together turn stove off and let sit.

Once juice are drained from mushrooms place them back on cookie sheet or baking pan and fill them with spinach stuffing mix. When stuffing process is all done dash each mushroom with white cooking wine then lightly sprinkle more breadcrumbs on top and place them in oven for 15-20 mins with oven on 350 degrees.Take stuffed mushrooms from oven and let cool for 10 minutes then let your guess enjoy! (Mushrooms can still be hot on the inside so eat with caution).

Hope you and your loved ones enjoy this recipe! Please come back and let me know how it turned out!!! Also come by and look for more Holiday Recipes from yours truly....

Love Always,
SunShyne B.

It's OK to let it go!

On a daily basis I talk to people that are stressed out and frustrated over other people's issues. I am guilty of doing this myself. The way I am learning to see it is; if we care enough about our loved ones to carry their stress why shouldn't they care enough to act right! Well that is because we can not control other people and their actions; as people we only know to do the thing that are installed in us over the years; so we tend gravitate towards habits we pick up along the way. Life is a learning experience for us all and everyone learns in a different way and at a different pace; you can not force someone to live the way you want them too. It is not fair to get upset at someone because you chose to make their burden your own. Some times we think we are helping people by telling them how they should live their lives, but in all reality we are pushing them further away. Nobody wants to be told how they should live their life; especially when they are probably just getting by on THEIR best. Life is already a heavy load and when you start piling up other people's burdens on your shoulders you begin to weaken and before you know it; your world comes tumbling down! I have carried the stress of people before and I ended up missing out on a lot; I couldn't even recognize my own happiness. There is nothing wrong with helping people or being a shoulder to cry on but once that conversation is over, you need to drop down and give it to God; that way it is not your worry. We all have issues that we deal with and will need a vent person but what good are they to us if they are so stressed and weak from all the burdens they carry around. Learning how to let go of the burden doesn't mean you don't love them; it just means that you are growing and allowing yourself to enjoy life. So take a deep breath and let it go!

WAIT WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY

Living in a state that is filled with people that have migrated from different areas of the world a.k.a. "The Transplants" have taught me a lot; but the things that stick out to me the most are Accents, Food, Holidays and Driving! Yes I said it....lol.

1. Every place has it's own lingo and so does every area of the region. I get it all the time people say "hey where are you from?" When I reply Boston. They usually say "you don't sound like your from Boston" so in return I say "what does a person from Boston sound like" Then I get the whole "PAK YA KHA" thing.... translation:" Park your car" and it drives me crazy because not everyone from Boston has the same accent and most people that claim they are from Boston really live in the suburbs not in the inner city. So I believe when it comes to an individuals accent it depends on where they were raised and who raised them.

2. Food is completely different depending on what you are use too, sometimes its even hard to find certain spices and ingredients that I am use to cooking with because the demographics here isn't large. White, Black and Mexican dominate my area so the spices I would normally use to make a West Indian dish are not available.

3. People celebrate holidays differently! In some parts of the world the make a big fuss over the holidays but in some cases people don't acknowledge holidays at all.

4. People's driving skills are different and I am noticing NO MIDDLE FINGERS or HONKING so that will keep you out of trouble.

Don't be afraid to take a chance and relocate just know that these 4 things are going to vary depending on where you go but they will always determine how well you adapt to your new surroundings!
